Obtain Tax ID Numbers and Register a Business

To be compliant as a company in New Mexico, you will have to get a federal Employer Identification Number (EIN) from the IRS, a New Mexico Business Tax Identification Number (BTIN) from the Taxation & Revenue Department, and to be registered with the New Mexico Secretary of State.

Understanding the Process

Step 1

To obtain an EIN or a FEIN, visit the IRS Application for Employer Identification Number.

Step 2

Register your business with the New Mexico Secretary of the State Business Services.

Step 3

Register online with the New Mexico Taxation & Revenue Department for your Business Business Tax Identification Number (BTIN).   A video tutorial is available to assist.

Important Note

Before you apply for a State BTIN number, make sure you have the following:

  • Your Federal Tax ID number (EIN);
  • Your business registration number from the Secretary of State; and
  • If you are a construction contractor, your contractor number.
